Junk removal, answered straight.
The questions people actually ask before they book, with straight answers and real numbers.
Pricing
How much does junk removal cost?
Most companies won't give you a number until they're standing in your driveway. With Zeft, you upload photos and confirm your price before anyone is sent out. If what's on site is a lot more than the photos showed, the hauler documents it and you approve any new price before loading.
Will the price change when the hauler shows up?
Your price is locked before you book, and no hauler can quietly change it. The one honest exception: if there's a lot more than your photos showed, your hauler sends an updated price with the reason, and you approve it before anything is loaded. You're never charged a different amount without saying yes first. That's rare in this industry — one study called 50 companies and found only 7 would give a firm price upfront, and on-site totals often ran well above the phone quote, decided after the truck was loaded.
Is there a minimum charge?
No. Your price covers the crew coming out to you and everything they take, so a single chair costs far less than a sofa and removing any item lowers your price. You see the exact number before you book.
Booking
Can I get same-day junk removal?
Often, yes. Post your job with photos, and any available licensed hauler nearby can take it. Same-day depends on where you are and the time of day, but with a marketplace of local haulers you're not waiting on one company's only truck.
Do I need to be home for the pickup?
Not always. If the items are easy to get to (curb, driveway, garage, hallway) you can leave instructions and track the hauler live. For anything inside or behind a locked door, someone usually needs to let them in.
How do I know the hauler is legit?
Every hauler on Zeft is licensed, insured, and identity-verified before they can accept a single job, and you can see their rating and reviews from real past pickups. Your payment is held until the job is done and the load reaches a licensed disposal facility.
What we take
What won't junk removal take?
Hazardous materials are off-limits almost everywhere: paint, gasoline, motor oil, propane tanks, pesticides, asbestos, chemicals, medical waste, and ammunition. Those need specialized disposal. Nearly everything else — furniture, appliances, mattresses, electronics, renovation debris, yard waste — is fair game.
Where does my junk actually go?
Reusable items go to donation and recycling wherever possible. The rest goes to a licensed disposal facility. On Zeft, the hauler's payout depends on a disposal receipt from that facility, so 'we recycle' is a verified step, not a slogan.
Etiquette
Do you tip junk removal crews?
Tipping isn't required. If you choose to tip, use an amount that reflects the service and effort. Zeft presents it as an optional thank-you for great service, never a condition of the pickup.
Items
How do I get rid of an old mattress?
In NYC, seal the mattress in a plastic bag and follow your address's DSNY trash-collection schedule. Retailer haul-away, donation, and local recycling may also be available. For a Zeft pickup, upload photos and access details to receive the private price for the actual job before booking.
Why does removing a refrigerator or AC cost more?
Fridges, freezers, and air conditioners may contain regulated refrigerant. Federal rules prohibit intentional venting and require proper recovery in covered disposal and servicing situations. The pickup price depends on the appliance, access, and compliant disposal route; Zeft shows the private amount from your actual details before booking.
